BELTON, Texas – McMurry Women's Tennis fought its way to a 6-3 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon in Belton.
The War Hawks are now 4-5 on the season, 1-0 in American Southwest Conference play while UMHB moves to (5-3, 2-1 ASC).
"Today was filled with emotion but we stayed mentally tough to clinch the match," said head coach
Chris Breaux.
McMurry would sweep The Cru in doubles play and split in singles to earn the match.
Doubles pair
Claire Hillyer and
Hope Turner would fight through to claim No. 1 doubles by a two point margin, 8-6.
Hannah DeFriend and
Jasmin Klassen cruised to a No. 2 doubles win, defeating Katy Beach and Sofia Sanchez, 8-1.
Gabrielle Ellwanger and
Bridgette Fly would round out doubles with an 8-5 win against UMHB's Alondra Torres Diaz and Amanda Almanza at No. 3 doubles.
With a 3-0 lead heading into singles play, the War Hawks worked hard to maintain the lead.
Hillyer posted a comfortable No. 1 singles win, 6-1, 6-0, before Klassen would conclude No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 defeat over Sanchez.
With a 5-0 lead and the match secured, the War Hawks would drop their first matchup on the day at No. 2 singles. Ellwanger would fall 6-2, 6-4 to Beach.
DeFriend would then drop a close battle against Victoria Rendon, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
To conclude the day, Diaz would also claim No. 5 singles for UMHB with a 6-4, 7-5 defeat over Turner.
The War Hawks look to continuing the win streak as they will face crosstown rival, Hardin-Simmons, on Friday, April 16 at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
