BELTON, Texas – McMurry University Women's Soccer took an early lead at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday afternoon, but was unable to retain the lead in a 2-1 loss in American Southwest Conference action.
The War Hawks (1-3, 1-2 ASC) scored in the 18th minute to charge ahead, thanks to a goal by junior transfer Hallie Rutherford on a set-up by senior Calista Flores. Rutherford now leads McMurry with five points on two goals and one assist this season.
UMHB (3-0, 3-0 ASC) would equalize the defensive struggle in the second half with a goal by Maria Rico – her third of the season. Just over 10 minutes later, the Cru took the lead on a goal by Emily Blaettner.
Shots were fairly even in the contest, with UMHB taking 10 shots and McMurry taking nine. The War Hawks were more efficient, putting five shots on target to UMHB's four. Senior Cindy Villasana had two saves in net.
Sophomore Alyssa Daily led the team with three shots, putting two on target.
McMurry returns home for its next game set for Sunday, March 7 at 2 p.m. against Lubbock Christian University. This game will serve as McMurry's senior day, with Sky Reynolds, Calista Flores, Courtney Kendrick, Angelica Navarro, Brianna Pina, Cindy Villasana, Emily Fisher, Maddy Smith and Ashley Ray.
