ABILENE, Texas – A late sixth inning rally would be enough for McMurry Softball to overtake No. 2 East Texas Baptist in the series finale, claiming the victory by a score of 4-2 at Edwards Field Saturday afternoon.
McMurry improves to 11-6 overall and 7-5 in American Southwest Conference play after claiming its first series against a nationally ranked opponent at Edwards Field. ETBU moves to (13-3, 9-3) after losing just its third game in the last 30, dating back to last season.
The War Hawks snagged the series finale after trailing 2-0 for five straight innings.
The Tigers quickly posted two runs at the top of the first inning, scoring Sarah Cedillo and Daniella Solis off of two hits.
McMurry seemed to struggle to put runners on base as ETBU's Preslye Cox would pitch a no-no up for five straight innings.
The game opened up for the War Hawks in the bottom of the sixth as a rally would get things started after senior
Kelsey Ahart would draw a walk to lead off the inning. Shortly after, a single up the middle by
Jessika Truax would advance pinch runner
Jesse Stephenson to put a runner in scoring position with only one out. With two on base, senior
Maisa Ryerson would draw a walk to load the bases for McMurry.
With pressure on the Tigers defense, senior
Savannah Flinn looked to capitalize on the runners at her disposal. Flinn would rise to the occasion as she would send a shot through the left side to register a two RBI single, evening up the score at two-all with runners on the corners.
Adding fire to the flame was senior
Cayleigh England. England would single to right field to bring in two more for the two RBI single before the Tigers were able to pull-out the inning without any further damage.
McMurry would go on to protect the plate at the top of the seventh as ETBU was unable to prevent the War Hawk win. Earning the win on the mound was sophomore
Kinleigh Stotts (4-1) who pitched a complete game, holding ETBU to two runs on six hits.
Up next for McMurry is a three-game series in Brownwood, Texas against Howard Payne. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Thursday's doubleheader and at 12 p.m. for Friday's finale.
