ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Baseball was unable to find its first victory of the season in midweek action on Thursday, as the War Hawks fell to Wayland Baptist by a final of 21-8 at Walt Driggers Field in Abilene.
With a 5-3 lead heading into the third inning, Wayland Baptist (10-6) took advantage of two defensive errors and scored eight unearned runs to pad its lead.
McMurry (0-5) cut the 13-3 deficit in half with five straight runs over the next two innings, including a Ryan Potter RBI double, an RBI groundout by freshman Blake Beach and a three-run bomb by senior Sam Hillyer. But it was too little, too late as WBU closed it in eighth frames.
Potter, Beach and Hillyer each had two hits in a 11 hit day for the War Hawks. Potter went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBI, while Hillyer had a homer, a walk, two runs and three RBI.
Defensively, the War Hawks struggled with nine errors, making for 11 unearned runs.
