ABILENE, Texas -- The McMurry University Softball team claimed a pair of non-conference wins Wednesday evening, defeating Schreiner University in doubleheader action at Edwards Field.
McMurry (7-4, 3-3) took game one after an 11 inning battle fell in favor of the War Hawks, claiming the 3-2 defeat in three hours and 27 minutes.Â
Schreiner jumped out to an early first inning lead in game two but would ultimately fall, 5-2, after a huge fifth inning surge by the War Hawks.Â
Game 1: McMurry 3, Schreiner 2
McMurry got off to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, scoring Ashley McClellan off of a throwing error by SU's first baseman. Â
Making some more noise in the bottom of the fourth, Kasey Woolard sparked a run for the War Hawks with a single through the left side. With Jesse Stephenson in to pinch run for Woolard, hits by Emily Michki and Brianna Martinez would bring her in for the score.Â
The Mountaineers put together a string of hits at the top of the sixth to score Rylee Ohlhausen off of a double from Carrie Fulton.
With a one point lead, McMurry brought in junior Kinleigh Stotts to close at the top of the seventh.
Schreiner refused to lay down, getting a seventh inning rally going to even the playing field once more. A single to left field by Marley Carrizales would score Malorie Solis, forcing extra innings as McMurry would not be able to put one more across the plate in the regulation.Â
It wasn't until the bottom of the 11th inning when McMurry would make its move. With bases loaded and two outs, head coach David McNally made a substitution at the plate, bringing in junior Jessika Truax for her first at bat on the day. With the game in-hand, Truax came through in a major way for McMurry, sending a shot through the right side to score McClellan for the walk-off hit and the win for the War Hawks. The walk-off marks the first in Edwards Field history.Â
McMurry totaled nine hits from seven different players, including a pair of hits by both Ashley McClellan and Mickhayla Nunez to lead the War Hawk offense. Schreiner had 10Â hits in the loss.

Schreiner attempted a late push in the top of the seventh scoring one run off of an error but could not over come the McMurry deficit before the final put-out of the game sealed the victory for the War Hawks.
