ABILENE, Texas – A second half goal by freshman Santiago Nunez started a late rally for McMurry University, but Sul Ross State proved to be too much in a 4-1 defeat in American Southwest Conference action at Wilford Moore Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 2-0 at the break and midway into the second half, Nunez took a pass from Andres Martinez and rolled it past a diving keeper to put the War Hawks (0-6, 0-5 ASC) on the scoreboard in the 77th minute.
Unfortunately for the home team, the Lobos (2-2-1, 2-2-1 ASC) scored two more goals in the final 10 minutes to end hopes of a comeback. The War Hawks caught some unlucky breaks inside the box – most notably a second half attempt by Jorge Reyes that hit bar down, but was deemed slightly off the mark for a no goal.
Possession seemed fairly even on the day, as both teams had opportunities. The Lobos owned a 13-9 shot advantage in the contest, but McMurry attempted more corners with a 7-5 advantage. Sul Ross had nine shots on target to McMurry's five.
Eight different players recorded shots for McMurry, led by Jared Moore with two. Both shots were on target.
Beckham Guest and Angel Salazar split time in net on Sunday, as both keepers recorded two saves in 45 minutes of action.
The War Hawks will play their home finale on Friday, March 19 at 2:30 p.m. against Howard Payne. This game will serve as senior day for DJ Jaime and Angel Arredondo.
