War Hawks upset bid falls short against Louisiana Tech, 3-1

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University took an early 1-0 lead against NCAA D1 opponent Louisiana Tech, but were unable to retain it in a 3-1 loss to the Lady Techsters on Monday afternoon at Wilford Moore Stadium.

The War Hawks (1-2, 1-1 ASC) held their own against a higher-level opponent, striking first with a goal in the sixth minute to take a quick lead. The goal came on a cross-field pass from senior Sky Reynolds to sophomore Alyssa Daily, who flicked it through for the score.

Louisiana Tech (7-3, 0-1 C-USA) trailed McMurry for nearly 20 minutes, but promptly took the lead with two goals within 19 seconds of each other midway through the first half. Sophie Fijneman and Erin Chung had the tying and go-ahead scores in the 24th minute, respectively.

The Lady Techsters added one more in the 43rd minute off the foot of Tomoyo Kuroyanagi with a laser from outside the box.

McMurry battled for possession in the second half, getting inside the opposing box a handful of times for some cross attempts. The War Hawks totaled three shots, two from Daily and one from Reynolds.

McMurry had three freshman keepers take the net in Priscella Caruso, Cortlynn Boone and Brianna Monroe. Caruso played the entire first half and had six saves, while Boone added two in about 33 minutes of action. The trio faced 17 shots with 11 on goal.

The War Hawks return to American Southwest Conference play on Friday, March 5 at Mary Hardin-Baylor. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
