Box Score ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Tennis earned its first win of the season Wednesday, defeating Schreiner University, 6-3, at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
The War Hawks nearly swept the Mountaineers in doubles play, with a tie-breaker being the deciding factor in the only loss. McMurry also took four out of the six singles matchups to earn the win.
In No. 1 doubles, senior
Claire Hillyer and sophomore
Hope Turner registered a dominating 8-0 win against SU's Jennifer Garcia and Victoria Morales.
Senior duo
Gabrielle Ellwanger and
Morgan Parnell followed quickly behind with a comfortable 8-1 win over Lindsey Reynolds and Rachel Pompel to add an early lead for McMurry.
Despite dropping the No. 2 doubles 8-7 on a 6-0 tiebreaker, freshmen
Jasmin Klassen and
Hannah DeFriend put up a tough fight throughout the entire matchup.
In singles play, freshman
Bridgette Fly cruised through a 6-1, 6-2 win against Reynolds.
Turner bounced back to earn a 7-5, 0-6, 10-5 win in No. 4 singles after dropping the second set. With a 10-5 tie-breaker, Turner went on to claim the point for McMurry.
DeFriend won her match 6-1, 6-4, while Ellwanger powered through to earn a 5-7, 6-0, 18-16 singles win for the War Hawks.
With its first win in the books, McMurry looks to carry the momentum into conference action on Friday against LeTourneau at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
