Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

War Hawks fall to Cowboys in season opener, 2-0

ABILENE, Texas – The Dyess Cup rivalry between crosstown rivals McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons University resumed inside Wilford Moore Stadium, as the McM men's soccer team fell to the Cowboys on Monday afternoon, 2-0.

The War Hawks (0-1, 0-1) out-shot the Cowboys (2-1, 1-0) 11-9 in a last-ditch effort, putting up eight second half shots after falling behind 1-0 in the first half.

HSU hit a stroke of luck in the 31st minute off a free kick near the goal, as McMurry accidently headed it into its own net right at the goal line. The unlucky bounce gave the Cowboys momentum heading to the locker rooms with a 7-3 shot advantage.

Early in the second half, HSU doubled the lead to 2-0 with a goal from Austin Wills – his first of the season.

The War Hawks mustered five shots on goal, including four in the second half, but could not break through.

Sophomore Luis Lopez led the team with four shot attempts and three shots on target. Junior Andres Martinez and sophomore Jorge Reyes each added two shots and played all 90 minutes.

Making his McMurry debut, junior goalkeeper Beckham Guest recorded three saves.

The War Hawks will continue their busy week with another home match on Wednesday, Feb. 24 against the University of Houston-Victoria. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Later in the week, McMurry and HSU will rematch on HSU's campus Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.
