Women’s soccer battles Tigers to scoreless draw

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University hosted East Texas Baptist University in a highly-anticipated American Southwest Conference matchup, but neither team found the net in a scoreless draw at Wilford Moore Stadium on Friday.

Both the War Hawks and Tigers own a 5-2-2 overall record. McMurry earns its second straight draw to open conference play at 0-0-2, while ETBU goes to 1-1-1.

Shots were even on the day at 10 apiece, with McMurry totaling six on target and ETBU placing five. Both teams also had long stretches of possession, with ETBU controlling much of the first half and McMurry a lot of the second.

Both goaltenders turned in strong days, with sophomore Cortlynn Boone collecting all five saves in the shutout. ETBU keeper Claire Montondon also had a busy day, fending off multiple corners while earning six saves.

Though the shot columns were fairly even, McMurry had more opportunities from the corner with eight. ETBU was limited to one corner – coming in the second half.

McMurry went to overtime for a second straight game and went to work early, taking three corners in the first four minutes. Neither team mustered a shot until ETBU's Aaliyah Casas near the end of the first, but Boone was there to prevent a golden goal.

Both team had tries in the second overtime, but the closest came on a last minute corner by the War Hawks. The corner ended up with freshman Ashley Ubl, who attempted an angled chip shot into a crowd around the net. Montondon came out with it to preserve the shutout.

Nine players took a shot for McMurry, led by Hallie Rutherford with a pair on net. Six of the 10 shots came from the bench.

The War Hawks have a quick turnaround as they host LeTourneau (1-7-1) on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
