Parnell scores match-winning point as War Hawks snap streak

ORLANDO – McMurry University Women's Tennis snapped a three-match losing streak Monday night by defeating Aquinas College, 4-3, at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

The War Hawks also claimed a 9-0 exhibition win over Curry College, which competed with only three players. McM earned five default victories.

Aquinas earned the doubles point by sweeping all three matches, with both number one and two doubles finishing with 6-4 tallies.

McM took a 2-1 advantage after numbers five and three singles. Freshman Mandy Roberson evened the match with a 6-4, 6-0 win at number five, and junior Gabrielle Ellwanger put McMurry in front with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at number three.

Aquinas tied it back up at two apiece, but McM quickly regained the lead with a 6-2, 7-5 victory by freshman Hope Turner at number six.

The Saints once again knotted things up heading into the final match at number four singles. Junior Morgan Parnell was even through the first two sets, splitting them 6-4 and 3-6. Parnell then outlasted her opponent 10-8 in the final set to earn McMurry the win.

The War Hawks conclude their trip to Orlando with a 6 p.m. contest tonight against the College of St. Scholastica.
