ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Tennis upped its winning streak to three matches Saturday, downing the University of St. Thomas (Houston) 7-2 at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
The War Hawks (5-1) won five singles matchups and two doubles matches.
McM took the early 1-0 lead after Neah Garza and Gabrielle Ellwanger blanked the Celts at number two, 8-0. After UST tied the match with a win at number one doubles, Morgan Parnell and Kiara Jones put McM back on top with an 8-5 win at number three.
Ellwanger then extended the lead to 3-1 after picking up a 6-4, 6-1 victory at number three singles. UST once again clawed back with a win at number two, but the War Hawks would go on to win the final four decisions.
At number one singles, Claire Hillyer earned a 6-4, 6-4 win, while Parnell claimed a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Hope Turner picked up the win at number five, 7-5, 6-1.
Jones had to work for her win at number six, playing all three sets. After dropping set one 6-3, Jones evened the match with a 7-6 (2) win in set two. Jones then handily won set three, 10-3.
McMurry is back at it again Sunday morning, hosting University of the Ozarks at 9 a.m.
