Homers power War Hawks to doubleheader sweep

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Softball hit three home runs as it powered its way to a doubleheader sweep of University of the Ozarks at Edwards Field Friday evening. McMurry won game one, 4-0, and took the nightcap, 13-5 in six innings.

The War Hawks (5-1, 2-0 ASC) will go for the series sweep of the Eagles (1-5, 0-2 ASC) Saturday at noon at Edwards Field. Live stats and video will also be available at mcmurrysports.com.

McMurry 4, Ozarks 0

Senior pitcher Hope Schoeneman tossed her second complete game shutout of the season in two tries in the first game of the series. Schoeneman forced 11 groundouts and struck out eight while allowing just four hits and one walk.

It is the fourth shutout for the War Hawks this season, surpassing the three they had in all of 2019.

The offense took a few innings to get started, but finally got on the board in the bottom of the third. McMurry got its speedsters on base with two outs in outfielders Sarah Nagy and Ashley McClellan, and both came around to score on a two-run single by junior third baseman Emily Michki.

The War Hawks received some insurance runs in the fifth, when junior second baseman Savannah Flinn crushed a two-run homer to left to provide Schoeneman with all the run support she would need.

Six players had one hit, while Flinn and Michki each had two RBIs.

McMurry 13, Ozarks 5 (6)

The War Hawks posted their best offensive output of the young season, scoring 13 runs on 14 hits. They had three innings scoring three or more runs.

Senior shortstop Mikayla Krause ended the game an inning early, hitting a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the sixth. It was the second walk-off grand slam of her career. She went 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs and four RBIs.

Krause wasn't the only one with four RBIs in game two, as sophomore pitcher Camille Scott also drove in four runs. She capped a five-run first inning with a three-run homer to left center off the light pole, then drove in another run in the second with an RBI groundout.

Scott also went the distance in the circle, pitching six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. Three of the runs were earned. She also struck out one while walking two.

Prior to Scott's homer in the first, McMurry scored a pair of runs to erase a 1-0 deficit on an RBI single by Michki and an RBI fielder's choice by junior catcher Mickhayla Nunez.

The War Hawks crossed the plate three times in the third inning, as the first five batters reached safely. Senior first baseman Eva Pourcio drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI bunt single. Later in the inning, McM received RBI singles by Flinn and junior Cayleigh England.

England went 2-for-2 at the plate off the bench, and remains perfect at the dish this season. Senior outfielder Kollin Morris collected her first two hits of the season, and scored a pair of runs in the process.

Nine different players tallied at least one hit and nine scored at least one run.
