KERRVILLE, Texas – McMurry University Men's Tennis split a pair of road matches Saturday, falling 9-0 to Trinity in the morning before bouncing back with a 7-2 win over Schreiner in the afternoon.
Although they were swept, the War Hawks (2-5) had some competitive matches against the Tigers.
At number three doubles, Joseph Diaz and Reid Smith battled before ultimately falling 8-5. In singles play, Carlos Martinez had his match go down to the wire in both sets at number one, but was defeated 7-6, 7-5.
After things didn't go their way in the morning, McMurry kept their heads up to defeat the Mountaineers.
Martinez and partner Chase Daniell gave McM the early 1-0 lead with an 8-3 win at number one doubles, while Smith and Diaz gave McM a 2-1 lead after doubles with an 8-4 win at number three.
The War Hawks nearly swept singles play, taking five of the six matches.
Martinez was consistent at the top flight, winning both sets 6-2. Daniell had a competitive first set, winning 7-5, but then took control in the second with a 6-0 win.
Zach Miller picked up his first singles win of the year at number three, claiming a 6-3, 6-1 win. Trey Fambrough also won his first match of the season, a 6-4, 6-0 decision at number six.
Diaz had the closest win of the afternoon, battling to a 7-6 win in set one after taking the tiebreaker. Set two was a little easier for Diaz, as he completed the win with a 6-4 set win.
McMurry returns to the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center next weekend to host the University of St. Thomas (Houston) and University of the Ozarks. First serve against the Celts is set for 4 p.m. February 22.
