ABILENE, Texas – Seven players saw the court for McMurry Men's Basketball on Saturday, as the shorthanded War Hawks battled Hardin-Simmons to the finish in a 75-60 setback inside the Mabee Complex.
McMurry (0-3, 0-0 American Southwest Conference) had six players turn in at least 25 minutes of action, but saw the most production from freshman Matt Pena off the bench. Pena led the team with 36 minutes and a career-high 18 points, shooting 4-7 from behind the arc.
Junior forward DJ Worrell made his first career start for the War Hawks and produced a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Worrell's rebound total more than doubled every other player on either team, as the second most came from HSU's Chase Cobb with seven.
Junior guard Remy Minor played over 35 minutes and had 15 points with five assists. Fellow junior Jordan Hall added six from the bench.
Trailing by double-digits at the break, the War Hawks pushed through and battled almost evenly in the second half. McMurry shot 14-34 (41.2 percent) from the floor in the second, but HSU was able to maintain its lead with strong shooting of its own at 16-27 (59.3 percent).
The Cowboys (3-2, 0-0 ASC) saw most of their production from their starters, led by Kyle Brennon with 20 points and Steven Quinn with 18 points and six rebounds.
McMurry will look to regroup for its next game on Thursday, Dec. 10 as it hosts East Texas Baptist. Tipoff from Kimbrell Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.
