Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers use free throws to down War Hawks, 79-67

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University men's basketball led for over 20 minutes against East Texas Baptist on Thursday night, but a late 9-0 run and exceptional free throw shooting by ETBU resulted in a 79-67 loss for the War Hawks inside Kimbrell Arena.

McMurry (0-4, 0-0 American Southwest Conference) led 39-38 with 13:20 remaining in the game, but ETBU (4-1, 0-0 ASC) would use short runs to pull away in the home stretch. Up two possessions with 5:55 remaining, the Tigers used a 9-0 run to take a double-digit lead and never looked back.

The Tigers were able to get to the free throw line and capitalize all game, shooting 29-34 for the game and 21-25 in the second half. McMurry finished 11-19 from the charity stripe.

For the War Hawks, junior guard Remy Minor led the way with 20 points, shooting 7-13 from the field and 2-5 from downtown. Minor was also big in drawing fouls on both ends, forcing eight of ETBU's 20 fouls.

Guards Shaydon Campbell and Landen Stephens each finished with 10 points. Stephens and DJ Worrell led the War Hawks in rebounding with six apiece. Freshman guard Matt Pena and sophomore forward Devon Webb had nine points, while junior Jordan Sherman added eight points.

Campbell, who made his season debut tonight, finished 3-5 from behind the arc.

Tonight's game will not count toward either team's conference record. The two opponents will meet again in the ASC opener on Jan. 7, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. in Marshall.

The War Hawks have a quick turnaround for Saturday, as they travel to Abilene Christian for a 1 p.m. tip inside ACU's Teague Special Events Center. Saturday's game will serve as an exhibition for McMurry.
