ABILENE, Texas – Two storied rivals met inside Kimbrell Arena on Tuesday afternoon, as the McMurry University women's basketball team dropped a tight non-conference contest against Sul Ross State, 69-59.
The War Hawks (0-1) pulled within one point in the first half after falling behind by double digits, using a 15-3 run to regain momentum at the break. The Lobos (1-3) pulled back ahead in the third quarter and held the lead the rest of the way.
McMurry had three sophomores score in double figures, led by Destiny Mathews with 21 points. Mathews shot 9-15 from the floor and also led the War Hawks with eight rebounds.
Fellow sophomore Taya Bridges added 14 points, six assists and six rebounds, while Trinity Meador had 12 points and six rebounds, shooting 3-9 from behind the arc. Both Bridges and Meador had key defensive plays, finishing with two blocks each. Bridges also led the team with three steals.
Freshman Kylee Smith also played a factor for McMurry in the paint, grabbing eight boards and a team-high four offensive rebounds.
The Lobos had five double-digit scorers and two double-digit rebounders. Alexis Carmosino and Vania Hampton each recorded double-doubles and combined for 24 of the team's 50 rebounds.
McMurry has scheduled another game for this week, as the War Hawks will host East Texas Baptist on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. inside Kimbrell Arena.
