War Hawks drop exhibition at Houston Baptist

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University opened its women's basketball season with an exhibition against NCAA DI opponent Houston Baptist on Saturday, falling by a final of 103-30 inside Sharp Gymnasium.

The War Hawks had most of their scoring in the first half, led by sophomore guard Taya Bridges with 12 points and sophomore forward Destiny Mathews with eight points. Bridges also led the team in rebounding with seven rebounds.

McMurry had 18 players appear in the contest, 12 of which earned their first minutes of action in the maroon and white.

The War Hawks' regular season opener is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 15 inside Kimbrell Arena against Sul Ross State. Tip-off from Abilene is set for 4 p.m.

Due to the rise of COVID-19 cases in Abilene this month, Tuesday's home game will be played without fans inside the arena. Players, coaches and essential game day personnel will be the only people in attendance, adhering to recommended masking and social distancing guidelines where possible.

McMurry's COVID-19 protocols will be re-evaluated prior to the next home basketball game in January.
