MARSHALL, Texas – McMurry University Women's Tennis opened the 2020 season on a high note, defeating East Texas Baptist 5-4 on the road in its season opener.
The War Hawks (1-0) trailed 4-3 with two matches to go, but freshmen Mandy Roberson and Hope Turner picked up wins at numbers five and six singles, respectively, to secure the win.
Competing in their first collegiate dual match, Roberson claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win at number five, while Turner breezed to victory at number six, 6-0, 6-2.
Turner turned in a magnificent performance in doubles, as well, teaming up with junior Claire Hillyer at number one doubles for an 8-2 win.
McMurry led 2-1 after doubles play, as senior Neah Garza and junior Gabrielle Ellwanger paired for an 8-3 win at number two doubles.
Ellwanger picked up McM's other singles win at number three, taking her match 6-2, 6-4.
All six singles matches went only two sets.
The War Hawks will stay in East Texas and be back in action Saturday, visiting LeTourneau at 9 a.m.
