ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Women's Basketball played a tight game with LeTourneau in its conference home opener, but a strong fourth quarter from the visiting YellowJackets downed McMurry, 67-54, on Thursday night inside Kimbrell Arena.
The War Hawks (7-3, 0-2 American Southwest Conference) trailed early on, but outscored LeTourneau (5-5, 1-0) in the middle quarters thanks to 28 second quarter points. With an even score after three quarters, LETU outscored McMurry 20-7 to win their ASC opener.
With the two top rebounding offenses in the ASC squaring off, McMurry was outrebounded for just the second time this season through 10 games. LETU grabbed 49 rebounds, while McM matched a season-low with 38.
In the low-scoring affair, sophomore guard Brittany Rodgers scored 12 points to lead the team. Rodgers shot 5-8 from the field for 62.5 percent and hit one of two attempts from behind the arc.
Freshman Cassidy Melton and senior Skyler Reyna combined for nine points on the night. Freshman Destiny Mathews and senior Sarah Doherty added six points, as Mathews had three baskets inside the arc and Doherty sank a pair of treys.
The War Hawks will look to get their first conference win of the season on Saturday as they host East Texas Baptist. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at Kimbrell Arena.
