Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Three-point shooting not enough in loss to East Texas Baptist

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Women's Basketball went 11-33 behind the arc against East Texas Baptist on Saturday afternoon, but could not keep pace in the second half as the Tigers won 75-66 inside Kimbrell Arena.

The American Southwest Conference loss marks the first back-to-back regular season setbacks for McMurry this season.

The War Hawks (7-4, 0-3 ASC) took a 36-30 lead into the locker rooms, but the Tigers (7-4, 1-1) erupted for 29 points in the third quarter to take a nine-point lead. An even fourth quarter was not enough, as the War Hawks missed out on their first conference win.

Despite the loss, McMurry led for over half the game before ETBU took the advantage midway into the third quarter. The War Hawks led for 20:44 and each team had six lead changes.

Freshman post Cassidy Melton netted a new career-high in scoring with 13 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Senior guard Sarah Doherty led the team for the third time in her last four appearances, totaling 14 points.

Senior forward Skyler Reyna just missed out on a double-double, totaling eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Reyna also led the team with five steals.

McMurry limited ETBU's outside shooting to two triples, holding the Tigers to 13.3 percent, but the visitors found success inside the arc. ETBU made 30-61 from the field for a 49.2 field goal percentage.

Nearly half of McMurry's baskets were of the three-point variety, led by both Doherty and freshman Trinity Meador who each went 4-8 from downtown. Melton added two threes, while the other trey came from junior guard Francheska Aguino to open the scoring.

The War Hawks will attempt to get back in the win column next week with two more home conference games, welcoming Howard Payne on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m. and Sul Ross State on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m.
