Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Berry shines in win over LeTourneau

ABILENE, Texas – Senior guard Dedrick Berry Jr. scored a career-high 26 points on his birthday and junior guard Colin Taylor hit the go-ahead three pointer with 26 seconds left as McMurry Men's Basketball improved to 2-0 in American Southwest Conference action with a 91-86 victory over visiting LeTourneau University inside Kimbrell Arena Thursday night.

Berry started the game on a 7-0 run, forcing an early YellowJacket (7-3, 0-1 ASC) timeout. Whenever the War Hawks (5-6, 2-0 ASC) needed a basket, they turned to Berry, who delivered 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.

Trailing 86-85 with less than a minute to go after a LeTourneau layup, Berry found Taylor on the right wing. After a pump fake, Taylor stepped back and rattled in the would be game-winning triple. It was the only three-point make on the night for Taylor, who scored all eight of his points in the second half.

McMurry led by 10 at three different points in the contest, including twice in the first half. The lead never got larger than that, as the YellowJackets fought back each time.

The third 10-point lead came at 66-56 with 12 minutes left, but LeTourneau went on a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to take its first lead at 69-66.

Junior guard Khalil Butler wouldn't let the LETU lead last long, as he knocked down three consecutive triples as McM regained the lead at 75-73. Butler hit four threes on the night as he finished with a double-double of 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Berry later extended the lead to 85-79 with his third trey of the night before the YellowJackets made a 7-0 to set up Taylor's three.

LeTourneau had one final chance to tie the game after freshman Cody LeBlanc split a pair of free throws, but turned the ball over before Taylor sealed the game with a pair at the charity stripe.

While leading the War Hawks in scoring, Berry also dished out a team-best four assists and snagged a pair of rebounds. Senior forward Mike Williams Jr. returned to action by posting a double-double of 14 points and 11 boards, while LeBlanc game McM four in double figures with 10 points.

McMurry shot 46.3 percent from the field, and held the YellowJackets to 37.2 percent, including an ice cold 11.4 percent from beyond the arc.

The YellowJackets held a 30-16 advantage in fast break points with their fast-paced offense, but McM held a sizable 37-19 lead in bench points.

The War Hawks continue ASC play Saturday when East Texas Baptist visits Kimbrell Arena for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
