ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball dropped its second game of the weekend Saturday afternoon, after it was swept 18-25, 23-25, 18-25 by visiting Concordia-Texas in an American Southwest Conference matchup at Kimbrell Arena.
The War Hawks (9-4, 0-2 ASC) scored three straight points in the first set to even the score at 16, bu the Tornados (11-3, 4-0 ASC) responded with five straight of their own to pull away for the one set lead.
McM led by five on numerous occasions in the second set, including 20-15, paced by four kills from junior right side hitter Khristyn Howard and three by senior outside hitter Jordyn Burnell. However, Concordia had a pair of 3-0 runs to take the lead and steal the set from the War Hawks.
Things were close once again in the third, as the War Hawks took advantage of three Tornado errors to go on a 5-0 spurt to take an 11-10 advantage. The teams would trade points until they were even again at 16. After McMurry scored twice to pull within 19-18, the Tornados scored six straight to end the match.
Burnell and Howard led the War Hawks with nine and eight kills, respectively. Senior right side hitter Justice McGowan added six. Burnell totaled nine digs, as well.
Junior setter Brynn Warnack recorded a double-double, finishing with a team-high 18 digs and 13 assists. Senior libero Jaelyn Green racked up 14 digs, while junior setter Lauryn Davis dished out 14 assists.
Concordia totaled 11 aces in the match compared to just two for McMurry. Of McM's six blocks, both McGowan and senior middle blocker Kianni Mitchell had three assisted blocks apiece.
The War Hawks remain at home next week, when they welcome Hardin-Simmons University to Kimbrell Arena Tuesday at 7 p.m. for an American Southwest Conference event.
