ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Soccer remained unbeaten Thursday evening, when the War Hawks defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God University, 3-0, at Wilford Moore Stadium in a nonconference matchup.
The War Hawks (4-0-3) got an assist from the Lions (2-4) on their first goal of the night. Pressured by sophomore midfielder Bri Caudle on the right side, the Lion defender attempted to pass the ball back to the keeper, but was off-target and rolled into the back of the net for an own goal.
Neither team mustered much for the next 30 minutes, but McMurry was able to get one last push before the half. With a minute to go, the War Hawks had a corner kick opportunity from the near corner. It was one of seven corners the War Hawks would attempt.
Freshman forward Ashlyn Heger sent a left-footed kick into the box, where sophomore midfielder Ashland Hansen was waiting at the far post to head it into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead just before the half.
McMurry tacked on one more goal in the second half, when midfielders Krista Thrasher and Calista Flores played the ball through to sophomore defender Kate Holland, who one touched the ball with her left foot, sending it arcing over the keeper's head for the final tally.
The War Hawks had a balanced attack, finishing with 15 shots, seven in the first half and eight in the second. Seven of the shots were on goal.
Goalkeepers Ashley Ray and Taytum McDonald combined on the shut out in net, each playing a half. McDonald recorded the only save of the night.
It's a quick turnaround for the War Hawks, as they welcome Piedmont College to Wilford Moore Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.
