DALLAS, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball split the first day of the University of Dallas tournament Friday, sweeping Schreiner University before falling to the host University of Dallas.
The War Hawks return to action Saturday to take on Millsaps College and Alfred University at noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
McMurry 3, Schreiner 0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-20)
The War Hawks swept the Mountaineers for the second time this week and defeated them for the third time overall this season, in their opening match of the weekend.
Freshman outside hitter Sharanda Anderson tallied her first career double-double in just two sets, as she racked up 13 digs and 10 kills. McMurry got other numerous contributions from freshmen, as well, as defensive specialists Adile Leal and Chloe Mayfield combining for 20 digs, led by Leal's 13.
McMurry just missed out on a third double-double, as senior outside hitter Jordyn Burnell totaled 12 kills and nine digs. Junior setter Lauryn Davis had the other double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs.
After a back and forth start to the match, McM scored three straight points to break a 12-12 tie and never looked back to win the first set. The War Hawks hit .273 to just .095 for the Mountaineers.
Schreiner took control of the second set, jumping out to a 14-2 advantage. However, that's when Anderson took over. She recorded seven of her eight kills in the set following the deficit, leading McMurry to score 16 of the next 20 points to tie the set at 18.
The Mountaineers would regain the lead at 23-21, but the War Hawks quickly answered with four out of five points to take the lead and eventually close out the set.
Burnell helped the War Hawks close out the match with eight kills in the final set, as McMurry finished with a .254 attacking percentage.
Sophomore setter Myranda Salcedo reached double figures in assists, as well, with 13.
Each team collected six aces.
Dallas 3, McMurry 0 (15-25, 17-25, 21-25)
McMurry suffered its first loss of the season in the nightcap against host University of Dallas, getting swept by the Crusaders.
The War Hawks held a 12-3 advantage in the third set, but were unable to hang on a force a fourth set.
McM was held to just a .029 attacking percentage for the match.
Burnell led the McM attack with eight kills, while senior right side hitter Justice McGowan tallied six kills. Anderson added five kills.
Davis dished out 14 assists, with junior setter Brynn Warnack adding 11. Defensively, libero Jaelyn Green led the War Hawks with 10 digs, while Burnell collected nine digs.
