Box Score 2 SEGUIN, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball took down a pair of Bulldogs Saturday in the second day of the Texas Lutheran tournament, sweeping Jarvis Christian College before completing the perfect weekend with a 3-1 win over host Texas Lutheran University.
After a successful opening weekend, the War Hawks host Arlington Baptist in their home opener September 6 at Kimbrell Arena. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
McMurry 3, Jarvis Christian 0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-19)
The War Hawks (4-0) used a balanced attack en route to the three-set win over the Bulldogs. McMurry dominated the second set, when it hit .379 to just .065 for Jarvis.
Senior middle blocker Justice McGowan led the way once again with 10 kills and a .615 attack percentage. Senior outside hitters Jordyn Burnell and Jada Cortez chipped in with eight and six kills, respectively.
Junior setters Lauryn Davis and Brynn Warnack combined for 27 assists and 10 digs, with Davis collecting three aces, as well.
Defensively, libero Jaelyn Green tallied 11 digs to lead the way as 13 War Hawks recorded a dig.
McMurry 3, Texas Lutheran 1 (32-34, 27-25, 25-16, 25-16)
In the tournament finale, the War Hawks dropped an extended first set before evening things up in the second set. Freshman outside hitter Sharanda Anderson entered the match in the third set and provided the War Hawks a spark in the final two sets with identical 25-16 victories.
Anderson finished with six kills and a .455 attack percentage, as McMurry improved their attack percentage in each set. After hitting just .213 in the first set, the War Hawks hit .333 and .387 with Anderson in the lineup.
A marathon first set saw the Bulldogs take a 1-0 advantage after winning 34-32, but the War Hawks won an extended set of their own, 27-25 in the second.
In the third set, McMurry fell behind 4-0 early before a stretch where it scored six straight points and 13 of 16. McMurry also scored four of the final five points to take control of the match.
Trailing 15-14 in the fourth frame, the War Hawks rattled off nine consecutive points, and held the Bulldogs to just one more point before securing the win. McMurry took advantage of four Bulldog errors and a pair of aces by junior middle blocker Megan Martinez during the run.
Burnell led the War Hawks with 15 kills and recorded a double-double by adding 17 digs, while senior middle blocker Kianni Mitchell added 11 kills. McGowan tallied nine kills.
Both Warnack and Davis eclipsed 20 assists apiece, with Davis handing out 26 helpers and Warnack an even 20. Davis recorded a double-double with 11 digs, while Warnack just missed out on one of her own with nine digs.
Joining Davis and Burnell with double-digit digs were Green and junior defensive specialist Mariah Shankle, who contributed 19 and 11 digs, respectively.
For the macth, the War Hawks hit .285 and held the Bulldogs to .156.
