Box Score HAWKINS, Texas – Trailing 2-0 in the first half, the McMurry men's soccer team strung together five unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 victory at Jarvis Christian College on Saturday.
Five different players accounted for the scores. Senior forward Javi Mejia was the offensive catalyst for the War Hawks, scoring the equalizer and assisting on two additional goals for four points.
With the decisive win, first year McMurry head coach Mike Lambeck notched his first career victory.
"I couldn't be happier with how the boys played today," Lambeck said. "We made a couple mistakes early on in the first half that saw us go down 2-0, but we regrouped at halftime and were really clinical in how we played from the front to the back.
"I also want to give a huge shout out to Coach Natalie Rigney for her help and input today, as well. Overall, I'm just really pleased with the whole team and am excited to go into next week's training full steam ahead as we prepare for Schreiner and Texas Lutheran."
The late comeback began with a score from junior James Alexander off an assist from Mejia, who then buried the tying goal with help from freshman defender Luis Lopez. Lopez had two assists on the night.
A penalty kick opportunity allowed McMurry to obtain the second half lead, as sophomore Andres Martinez found the net. Seniors Miguel Esteban Jr. and Jesus Sanchez added insurance with two more goals near toward the finish.
Up next, McMurry will begin a three game home-stand that starts Sept. 6 against Schreiner University. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. The following afternoon, Sept. 7, McMurry hosts Texas Lutheran at 4:30 p.m.
