Box Score 2 SEGUIN, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball opened the 2019 campaign Friday at the Texas Lutheran Invtitational, earning a pair of wins. The War Hawks began the day with a 3-1 win over Schreiner University before sweeping St. Joseph's College-Long Island in the nightcap.
Day two of the tournament sees the War Hawks face Jarvis Christian College at 10 a.m. Saturday and host Texas Lutheran at 2:15 p.m.
McMurry 3, Schreiner 1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-17)
After falling behind early and splitting the first two sets, the War Hawks (2-0) eased to victory by taking sets three and four. Overall, McMurry hit .215 while holding the Mountaineers (0-1) to just a .098 attacking percentage.
Senior outside hitter and senior middle blocker Justice McGowan led the way offensively, with 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Burnell hit .417 while McGowan hit .500. Burnell nearly missed a double-double with nine digs.
Junior setter Brynn Warnack posted a double-double of 11 assists and 10 digs off the bench, while senior libero Jaelyn Green paced the McMurry defense with 15 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Adile Leal also had double digit digs with 11.
Setting up the offense, junior Lauryn Davis dished out 24 assists to go with seven digs.
As a team, the War Hawks recorded seven aces and 13 blocks.
McMurry 3, St. Joseph's-Long Island 0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-17)
The War Hawks jumped all over the Golden Eagles in the first set and never looked back as they swept St. Joseph's-Long Island. McMurry was able to get many of its reserves playing time in the third set, as well.
McGowan led the attack at the net with 10 kills on a .625 attack percentage as the War Hawks hit .329 for the match. Seven players recorded at least three kills.
Sophomore setter Myranda Salcedo handed out a dozen assists, while Warnack added 10.
McMurry tallied nine blocks and nine aces.
