BROWNWOOD, Texas – McMurry University Softball saw its two run lead erased as Howard Payne University rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to steal the series finale from the War Hawks, 7-5.
The War Hawks (13-22, 8-16 ASC) had a 5-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, but after tying the game with a triple and a single, the Yellow Jackets (15-20, 11-13 ASC) walked off with the win on a two run homer.
McMurry had taken the lead in the fourth, scoring four times to take a 4-1 advantage. Pinch hitter Kamwren Jackson drove in the first run with an RBI single to center, and McMurry grabbed a 2-1 lead on an RBI groundout by pinch hitter Reyna Garcia.
Second baseman Sydney King kept the lineup moving with an RBI double to right center, with right fielder Summer Quiroga capping the inning with an RBI single to right.
Howard Payne pulled back within one in the bottom half of the fourth with its first two-run home run of the game.
The War Hawks added an insurance run in the fifth to extend the lead back to two when centerfielder Ashley McClellan reached on an error, scoring first baseman Rachel Ripley.
However, McMurry was unable to hold on to that two-run advantage in the seventh.
Righty Hope Schoeneman got the start in the circle, but was pulled in the fourth inning for reliever Emily Levario.
King finished with two of McMurry's eight hits, as well as with an RBI and run scored. McClellan tallied an RBI and a run, as well.
The War Hawks return home to close out the regular season against second ranked East Texas Baptist April 26-27.
