ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Tennis dropped its regular season finale Tuesday afternoon, falling 5-4 in a nail biter at rival Hardin-Simmons University.
The Cowgirls (7-11, 5-1 ASC) took all three doubles points, but it didn't come easily. Samantha Ritz and Kaitlyn Roberts forced their number one doubles match to extras, but fell 9-7.
McMurry took over in singles play, however, as the War Hawks (9-8, 4-2 ASC) took four of the six matches. At number one, Ritz fought for her two set win, claiming a 7-5, 7-6 win.
Claire Huffine had no issues at number two singles, posting a clean slate with a 6-0, 6-0 win. McMurry's final two points came at numbers five and six, respectively. Zayra Gomez won at number five, 6-2, 6-0, while Briana Perez went all three sets for her win. Perez won set one, 6-3, before dropping set two, 6-0. In the third set, Perez claimed the point by taking the tiebreaker, 10-4.
McMurry is locked into the third seed for the American Southwest Conference Championship May 2-4, hosted by UT Dallas.
