AUSTIN, Texas – McMurry University Women's Tennis got back to its winning ways Thursday afternoon, defeating Concordia Texas 8-1 in American Southwest Conference at the Austin Tennis Center.
The War Hawks (8-7, 3-1 ASC) started out strong, sweeping doubles play in some close matches. Samantha Ritz and Kaitlyn Roberts picked up the first point at number one with an 8-6 victory, followed by an 8-4 win at number three by Gabrielle Ellwanger and Neah Garza.
McMurry completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at number two by Claire Huffine and Zayra Gomez.
In singles play, McMurry won four of their five points in straight sets. Ellwanger put the War Hawks up 4-0 over the Tornados with a 6-1, 6-2 win at number three, before Briana Perez clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-1 win at number six.
With the match in hand, Ritz and Huffine won tight battles at number one and two, respectively. Ritz handily won set one, 6-3, before gutting out a 7-6 (7-0) win in set two. Huffine won her match 6-2, 7-5.
Gomez had her match go all three sets at number five after dropping the first set and winning the next two. After a 6-3 setback, Gomez took control with a 6-2 win in set two and 10-5 win in set three to claim the point.
McMurry is right back at it Friday with a visit to Mary Hardin-Baylor with first serve at 2 p.m.
