ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Tennis won their sixth match in their last eight as they have evened their record after defeating Schreiner University, 7-2, Saturday at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
The War Hawks (6-6) took two out of three in doubles play, with Zayra Gomez and Claire Huffine earning an 8-4 win at number four before Gabrielle Ellwanger and Neah Garza picked up a hard-fought, 8-6 win at number three.
McMurry then flexed its muscle in singles play, taking five of the six matches. Samantha Ritz picked up the first single's point with a dominant, 6-0, 6-2 win at number one. Huffine and Ellwanger followed Ritz with 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-4 wins at numbers two and three, respectively.
Garza suffered the only singles loss at number four, but it wasn't without great effort. Garza won set one 7-5, but fell in sets two and three, 6-2, 10-5.
Gomez and Briana Perez closed out the match with wins at numbers five and six, respectively. Gomez won 6-1, 6-4, while Perez claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Next up for the War Hawks is a visit from Howard Payne University to the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center April 5 at 2 p.m.
