Softball drops a pair to Sul Ross

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Softball was dropped a pair of American Southwest Conference home games Friday evening, falling 2-0 and 5-2 to visiting Sul Ross State University at Red Bud Park.

The teams will conclude the three game series Saturday at noon.

Sul Ross 2, McMurry 0

The Lobos (11-14, 7-9 ASC) scored a pair of runs in the third inning for the 2-0 victory. They scored first on a double steal and later on a sacrifice fly.

McMurry had runners in scoring position in the second, third and fourth innings, including a leadoff double in the fourth by centerfielder Ashley McClellan, but were unable to come up with a timely hit.

McClellan's double and a single by first baseman Rachel Ripley accounted for the War Hawks' (9-16, 4-10 ASC) only two hits in game one.

Hope Schoeneman tossed a complete game in the circle for McMurry, allowing just one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts.

Sul Ross 5, McMurry 2

McMurry committed six errors in game two, as the Lobos took advantage with five unearned runs. The scored two unearned runs in the third and added three more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.

The War Hawks were able to chip away with two in the bottom of the sixth, as Schoeneman drove in a run with a groundout followed by the War Hawks taking advantage of a Lobo throwing error.

McMurry had an opportunity for a run in the third, as Ripley laced a two-out single to center with runners on first and second. However, pinch hitter Mackenzie Baron was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. The War Hawks also had a runner in scoring position in the fourth.

Emily Levario took the tough-luck loss, allowing five unearned runs in five innings on five hits. She struck out one. Cheyenne West threw the final two innings in relief allowing just one hit.

Of McMurry's seven hits, Ripley had three and designated player Kasey Woolard had two. All seven hits were singles.
