War Hawks drop heartbreaker to Lobos

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Softball couldn't hold on to an early 2-0 lead as it fell in its series finale to visiting Sul Ross State Saturday, 3-2.

The War Hawks (9-17, 4-11 ASC) scored both their runs in the bottom of the first inning, with the first coming on a solo home run by left fielder Kollin Morris. They would then add a run on an RBI single by designated player Kasey Woolard scoring first baseman Rachel Ripley, who reached on a double.

It would turn into a pitcher's duel, as that score held until the top of the fifth inning. The Lobos (12-14, 8-9 ASC) would score three times in that inning on a single and then a two-run double.

McMurry got a runner in scoring position in the fifth and put the tying run on in the seventh, but was unable to drive it home.

Hope Schoeneman tossed all seven innings for the War Hawks, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out three.

Both Ripley and shortstop Reyna Garcia had a pair of hits for McMurry.

The War Hawks will next visit Belhaven University April 5-6.
