SEGUIN, Texas – The McMurry women's tennis team claimed its fourth win in the last six matches on Saturday, topping Texas Lutheran 7-2 at the Ohlenbusch-Ruin Tennis Center.
TLU (4-3) claimed the early momentum by taking two-of-three doubles matches. Zayra Gomez and Claire Huffine enjoyed the only McMurry (4-6) tandem victory with an 8-1 win at the second seed. The War Hawks trailed 2-1 heading into the singles portion of the match. However, on the narrow court, McMurry dominated.
The War Hawks swept singles play for the final 7-2 margin. Samantha Ritz triumphed over M.P. Hubert in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 6-2) at number one singles. Huffine won in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) at number two singles, while Gabrielle Ellwanger held on in the second set (7-6) after shutting out her opponent in the opening set at three singles. Neah Garza took home the point at number four singles in straight sets by identical 6-3 scores. Finally, Gomez (number five singles) and Briana Perez (number six singles) each defeated their opponents by convincing 6-0, 6-0 margins.
The War Hawks will open ASC Conference play on Friday on the road, as they travel to Sul Ross State. That match is slated for a 1 p.m. opening serve.
