SHERMAN, Texas – It was another tightly contested battle for McMurry University Women's Tennis, but the War Hawks came up just short in a 5-3 defeat at Austin College Friday evening.
The War Hawks (3-6) quickly fell behind 2-0, but picked up a point with an 8-4 win at number two doubles by Claire Huffine and Zayra Gomez heading into singles play.
The Kangaroos (6-3) would clinch the match with the first three singles wins, but the War Hawks would pick up two points with wins at number five and one by Gomez and Samantha Ritz, respectively. Gomez won her match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, while Ritz won her match in three sets. Ritz split he first two sets 6-4 before winning set three, 10-7.
Briana Perez was in her third set, but the match was unable to be finished. She lost set one, 6-2, before taking set two, 6-3. She was trailing 9-7 when the match was concluded.
McMurry is back in action today at 3 p.m. at Texas Lutheran.
