BELTON, Texas – McMurry University Softball split its doubleheader at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday afternoon, capturing a 9-5 win in game one before falling in game two, 6-0.
Next up for the War Hawks is a trip to NCAA II UT Permian Basin Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
McMurry 9, UMHB 5
The War Hawks (9-14, 4-8 ASC) used a pair of four-run innings for the game one win, and got another complete game effort from pitcher Hope Schoeneman.
UMHB rallied back with two runs in the first inning and three in the second to take a 5-4 lead over the War Hawks. But that is all Schoeneman would allow, putting up zeros over the last five innings for the complete game win.
Trailing 5-4 entering the top of the fourth, McMurry used their second four-run inning of the game to regain the lead. With the bases loaded, left fielder Kollin Morris ripped a two-run single to left center to put McMurry up 6-5. After a walk to reload the bases, designated player Kasey Woolard singled in two more runs for an 8-5 advantage.
McMurry would add an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single by third baseman Adrienne Nairn.
The War Hawks got the scoring started in the top of the first, when second baseman collected an RBI single to right. Shortstop Mikayla Krause would draw a walk for an RBI two batters later, and catcher Nina Hernandez capped the inning with a two-run single.
Morris, Woolard and Hernandez all collected two hits and two RBIs. Right fielder also added a pair of hits and scored twice, with Morris scoring twice, as well.
UMHB 6, McMurry 0
The Crusaders (12-12) shut out the War Hawks in game two of the doubleheader. UMHB scored three times in the second and twice in the third before adding a single run in the sixth.
McMurry was held to just one hit by pinch hitter Reyna Garcia and had just three runners reach base.
Emily Levario got the start in the circle, allowing six runs, three of which were earned, over six innings. She had two strikeouts, as well.
