ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Tennis saw its winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon, dropping a 6-3 contest to Connecticut College at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
The War Hawks (3-5) were swept in doubles play to begin the match, but not without some close contests. Samantha Ritz and Kaitlyn Roberts battled to an 8-6 defeat at number one, while Claire Huffine and Zayra Gomez fought hard at number two, falling 8-5.
Four of the six singles matches went all three sets, with the War Hawks and Camels (5-2) splitting those matches. Gomez lost the first set 6-0 at number five, but rebounded in set two with a 6-3 win before taking the third set, 10-6.
Briana Perez also dropped her first set at number six before taking the second and third sets, 6-1 and 10-6. Ritz won her first set at number one, 6-2, but fell in sets two and three, 6-1, 6-3. Gabrielle Ellwanger won her first set, as well, 7-5, but dropped set two, 6-0. The final set went down to the wire, with the Camels eventually taking the point, 7-5.
Huffine picked up a straight set win at number two, 6-2, 6-1.
McMurry is on the road for their next match at Austin College Friday at 5:30 p.m.
