McMurry men knocked off by DBU; Martinez improves to 2-0

ABILENE, Texas – Carlos Martinez outlasted Dallas Baptist University's Grant McKenzie at number one singles, but the War Hawks dropped a competitive match to Dallas Baptist by a 6-1 final.

Martinez dropped the first set to McKenzie 6-4, but rallied to force a third set after taking the second set 7-5. In the deciding frame, Martinez remained in control with a 10-5 deciding set, taking the point at number one singles.

McMurry (0-4) gave the Patriots (4-1) all they wanted in doubles play. Martinez and Chase Daniell fell to McKenzie and Riley Smith 7-6 at number one doubles, while Joesph Diaz and Chris Causer came up just shy of claiming third seed doubles. DBU's Brian Nguyen and Andre Edwards held on 7-5 to ensure the doubles point.

In addition to Martinez's singles performance, Connor Hogan offered another bright spot, forcing a second set tie-breaker, but falling to Josh Williams of DBU 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Diaz and Zach Miller gave great effort at five and six singles, both falling 8-6 in the abbreviated matches after the team result had been decided.

McMurry will return to action on February 16 when they host Southwestern at 10 a.m. at Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
