Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

War Hawks down Pirates to extend win streak, 65-53

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Basketball continued its hot streak inside Kimbrell Arena on Tuesday night, sailing past Southwestern University with a 65-53 non-conference win.

The War Hawks (6-1) are now winners of four straight games and improved to a 4-0 record on their home hardwood. Meanwhile, the Pirates fell to 2-6 on the year.

Senior forward Skyler Reyna needed 22 points to move up the all-time career scoring list at McMurry, and scored exactly that for a game high total. The 22 point night bumps her up to sixth in all-time scoring past Ogonna Merritt (1996-2000), as Reyna now has 1,195 career points.

Additionally, Reyna pulled in 15 rebounds to mark her fourth double-double in the last five contests.

A back-and-forth first half saw Southwestern grab an 18-17 first quarter lead, but McMurry regained the advantage before the half with three successful free throws by Taya Bridges. The four-point lead inflated in the second half with three-point baskets from Sarah Doherty and Trinity Meador sparking the surge.

Leading 55-50 with 3:17 remaining, McMurry went on an 8-0 run to pad the lead. McMurry's last six points came from the charity stripe, sealing the hard-fought home win.

Freshman post Abrelle Godfrey set new career highs in nearly every category, finishing with 11 points in 18 minutes of action.

Doherty and junior Francheska Aguino served as the veteran presence in the backcourt, combining for 14 points and five assists with only one turnover each. Both players contributed 30 minutes.

McMurry will look to carry its momentum into conference play, as the War Hawks travel across town to open American Southwest Conference play at Hardin-Simmons (6-1) on Saturday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at HSU's Mabee Complex.
