ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Women's Basketball carried a four-game win streak into its American Southwest Conference opener on Saturday, but fell to crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons at the Mabee Complex by a final of 71-62.
The War Hawks (6-2, 0-1 ASC) were within four early in the fourth quarter, but a 7-0 run by the Cowgirls (7-1, 1-0) kept the margin closer to double digits the rest of the way.
Falling behind by 11 points in the first half, McMurry used a 7-0 run before the intermission to pull within one possession at 32-30. The War Hawks played catchup the remainder of the game, but could not keep up in the late going. HSU shot over 50 percent in the first and last quarters.
Freshman Destiny Mathews had her second career double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Mathews also led the team with three steals.
Senior Skyler Reyna led all scorers with 19 points. She just missed a double-double with nine boards and has a team-best three assists.
In 14 minutes of action, Taya Bridges made an impact on both sides of the court with nine points and a pair of steals.
McMurry will look to get back in the win column before the end of December, as Louisiana College comes to Kimbrell Arena for a non-conference tilt on Friday, Dec. 20 at 3 p.m.
