ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University women's soccer team saw a historic season come to a close in a heartbreaker, as No. 1 Hardin-Simmons pulled out a come-from-behind 2-1 win on Friday afternoon to advance to the American Southwest Conference final.
McMurry (12-4-6) hopped out to an early lead in the 16th minute thanks to a goal from junior Sky Reynolds. Fellow junior Calista Flores connected with her classmate from the right side, allowing Reynolds to center up and roll one through.
After HSU (16-2-1) tied things up in the 68th minute, the game appeared destined for overtime. But with 10 seconds showing on the scoreboard, McMurry was called for an unlucky foul in the box, setting up the game-winning penalty kick from Madelyn Dowell to shatter any hopes of McMurry extending the season.
McMurry controlled the tempo in the first half with a 4-2 shot advantage over the Cowgirls, but the second half surge proved to make the difference late.
The teams combined for only four shots on goal in a battle of possession, with McMurry keeper Cindy Villasana making the lone save of the contest. Senior Jordan Gregory also saw time in net for her final collegiate appearance.
HSU will advance to the ASC Championship game to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor on Sunday at 1 p.m.
For McMurry, the 12 wins are a program record under third year head coach Charles Nobles.
Additionally, the War Hawks hosted their first ever ASC Championship quarterfinal round match at Wilford Moore Stadium this week, while advancing to their first-ever ASC semifinal game in school history.
