ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University women's basketball team opened its 2019-20 season with a crosstown exhibition against NCAA Division I mid-major power Abilene Christian, as McMurry fell by a final of 111-43 on Tuesday in Moody Coliseum.
While serving as an exhibition for McMurry, the No. 23 mid-major ranked Wildcats earned their first official win of the season while raising their 2018-19 Southland Conference championship banner on the same night.
The War Hawks were able to use 19 players in today's test run, with no player seeing more than 18 minutes of action. Additionally, 15 different McMurry players had at least one bucket on the night.
Freshman forward Destiny Mathews and freshman center Abrelle Godfrey led the way with six points each in their unofficial debuts. Senior guard Sarah Doherty chipped in five points in 12 minutes of action.
Another freshman contributed for the War Hawks in center Jade Smith, reeling in a team-best four rebounds in 12 minutes of action. Post players Skyler Reyna and Brittany Rodgers started the contest, adding three rebounds in their 12 minutes.
With the team's lone exhibition now out of the way, McMurry will officially begin its season on Friday, Nov. 8 at home against Schreiner. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Kimbrell Arena.
