LONGVIEW, Texas – Despite having to wait out a lightning delay and 75 scoreless minutes, McMurry University Women's Soccer found a way to keep its record unbeaten and tie the program record for most wins in a season after defeating LeTourneau University, 1-0, on the road Thursday evening.
With the rain coming down, junior midfielder Sky Reynolds headed a loose ball in front of the net across to freshman forward Alyssa Daily, who delivered the game winning goal in the 76th minute into the empty net. It was Daily's American Southwest Conference leading 10th goal of the season.
Goalkeepers Cindy Villasana and Jordan Gregory combined for McMurry's sixth shutout of the season, as each tallied two saves in a half of play.
In the 66th minute, play was stopped for a lightning delay. The break gave the War Hawks (8-0-4, 3-0-0 ASC) a breather, and they came out fresh. McM had six of its 11 shots after the delay, including the goal.
Both teams finished with 11 shots, with the War Hawks having five on goal and the YellowJackets (5-4, 1-2 ASC) four. Reynolds led McM with four shots. McMurry also held a 5-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
The road trip continues Saturday with a 5 p.m. ASC contest at East Texas Baptist University.
