AUSTIN, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball was swept in a road matchup Friday night, falling 22-25, 19-25, 19-25 at Concordia University Texas.
The War Hawks were tied late in sets, but were unable to close them out.
McM quickly scored the first two points of the night, but the Tornados responded with six unanswered points. The teams traded 4-0 runs during the set, as McMurry fought back to tie it at 22 on a kill by junior blocker Megan Martinez. Martinez totaled six kills on the night.
However, the Tornados closed the set with three straight points.
The War Hawks led for the first half of set two, before Concordia took a 13-11 lead on a 5-0 spurt. Martinez tied it again on a kill to make it 18-18, but Concordia closed strong once again, scoring seven of the final eight points of the set.
McMurry fell behind 3-1 in the final set, but a 7-0 run, started by three kills, gave McM an 8-3 advantage. After trading the next few points, the Tornados slowly chipped away. McMurry was only able to score back-to-back points once more, a 3-0 run for a 15-13 lead. But CTX had multiple mini runs to steal the set and complete the sweep.
Senior outside hitter Jordyn Burnell led the War Hawks with nine kills, as both teams hit below .100. This is McM's first loss of the year when the opponent hits less than .100.
Junior setter Lauryn Davis recorded a double-double by dishing out 11 assists and tallying 10 digs. Burnell had 10 digs, as well, while freshman libero Adile Leal had a team-high 15 digs. Leal had two of the team's five aces.
