War Hawks top Tornados, clinch ASC home game

ABILENE, Texas – For the first time in program history, McMurry University Women's Soccer will host a quarterfinal match of the American Southwest Conference Tournament, after it clinched a top four seed with a 1-0 victory over Concordia University Texas Thursday evening at Wilford Moore Stadium.

The War Hawks clinched the top four spot with the win and a little help from Howard Payne University, who defeated LeTourneau University, 1-0.

Both teams battled the rain, wind and cold temperatures in a defensive battle. McMurry finally broke through in the 84th minute, when freshman forward Alyssa Daily sent a short pass from the left corner to sophomore defender Kate Holland. After one touch, Holland sent a liner off her left foot that bounced over the diving Tornado keeper.

The McM defense was strong as it posted its ninth shutout of the season, holding the Tornados without a shot in the second half. McMurry outshot Concordia 6-3 for the contest.

Both Cindy Villasana and Jordan Gregory played a half in net, with Villasana recording two saves in the first half. Gregory did not face a shot.

Daily had a couple opportunities to put the War Hawks in front, but had one shot sail just high and another shot saved on a sliding stop.

Holland, Daily and sophomore midfielder Bri Caudle each had two shots apiece, with Holland having two on goal.

McMurry had seven corner kick opportunities to four for Concordia. The War Hawks also held a large advantage in possession, 61-39 percent. The War Hawks had the ball in the attacking half of the field for 60 percent of their possession.

The War Hawks will face another top ASC opponent Saturday, when the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor visits Wilford Moore Stadium for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
