Men’s soccer preps for final two home games, senior night

ABILENE, Texas – Only three regular season games remain for McMurry University Men's Soccer in 2019, two of which will take place at Wilford Moore Stadium in Abilene on Thursday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 26 against Concordia (Texas) and Mary Hardin-Baylor, respectively. Both games kick off at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday's regular season home finale will serve as senior night, where six of McMurry's seniors will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony. The festivities will begin following the women's soccer matc and prior to men's soccer kickoff.

NOTES:

LAST WEEK: McMurry stole a point in dramatic fashion last week, tying at Sul Ross State, 1-1, with an equalizer in the 89th minute. The momentum did not carry over into Saturday's game at Howard Payne, as the Yellow Jackets held off McMurry for a 2-1 win.

BAD LUCK: Since opening American Southwest Conference play with two wins, the War Hawks have dropped five of their last six games, but four of the five losses have been by a final of 2-1.

THREE'S COMPANY: McMurry has scored at least three goals in all five of its wins. In each loss, the War Hawks have scored two goals or less. They have scored four and five goals twice each in games this season.

LESS IS MORE: The War Hawks have been top five in the ASC in goals per game all season (currently fifth at 2.07) and do so with limited shooting, as McMurry ranks second to last in the conference in shots per game (8.93).

AMONG THE ASC LEADERS: Individually, senior strikers Javi Mejia and Miguel Esteban Jr. are both tied for fourth in the ASC with 17 points. Esteban Jr. ranks tied for third in goals with eight, while Mejia ranks the same in the assist category.

SIGNATURE WIN: The last time McM hosted Mary Hardin-Baylor was in 2017, as the War Hawks stunned the No. 21 Crusaders with a 1-0 shutout victory. That loss was UMHB's only ASC defeat that season, as the Cru finished with a 17-3-1 overall record.

SCOUTING CTX: Concordia enters with an 8-5-2 record and are winners of four straight contests. Last week, the Tornados took down Louisiana College with a 9-1 win and defeated Belhaven 1-0. Three of their last four wins have come via shutout behind the goalkeeping of sophomore Erik Rodriguez with a 1.06 goals against average. Marco Vazquez and Edgar Guerrero are each top 10 point getters in the ASC at 14 for the season.

SCOUTING UMHB: The Cru enter with a 9-4-1 overall record and a 6-2 mark in conference play. Much like their travel partner Concordia, UMHB rides a four game win streak into the week. Patrick Roach leads UMHB with seven goals on the season, which also ranks fifth in the ASC. The Cru uses three goalkeepers fairly evenly, led by Isai Olvera with 503:41 minutes and a 0.89 GAA. He and Ethan Rimbey share a 3-2 record, while Dalton Lloyd is 3-0 in four appearances.
