ABILENE, Texas - Three McMurry University women's basketball players tallied in double-figure scoring to lead a 90-57 romp over Sul Ross State University. The 90 points by the War Hawks (6-12, 3-6 ASC) versus the Lobos (4-13, 2-6 ASC) was their highest scoring game of the season, thus far.
The trio of high-flying McMurry players was led by junior
Skyler Reyna. Reyna rolled up her 10th double-double of the season – and 29th of her McM career - with 20 points and 13 rebounds, both game-leading totals. Reyna was 7-for-13 from the field, also giving off two assists and making a pair of steals.
Reyna's totals also helped her reach two more career plateaus in the game. Reyna surpassed 600 career rebounds, now at 605 boards. She also surpassed 900 career points, inching her way up to 912 points (as she attempts to become just the 10th McMurry player to reach 1,000 career points).
But Reyna had plenty of help as the War Hawks marched to the win. Senior guard
Dominique Machuca came off the bench to add 17 points, thanks to five treys (5-of-9) and a 6-of-11 game from the floor, overall, in her 26 minutes of work.
Sophomore
Brittany Rodgers also scored in double figures coming in as a reserve, scoring 14 points. Rodgers was 6-of-10 from the floor.
Starting junior guards
Sarah Doherty and
London Weilert both narrowly missed the double-figures party with nine points, apiece. Weilert contributed seven rebounds and four steals. Doherty had a game-high seven assists and a blocked shot.
Junior guard
Isabel Carrion was McMurry's most larcenous player with seven of the War Hawks' 20 steals (which were converted into 34 points). Carrion also booked nine points and five rebounds.
Eight points from
Savannah Johnson, three from
Jaymi Gordon-Deans and one from
Taylor Smith rounded out the McM's offense.
As a team, McMurry shot 46 percent from the floor overall (31-68) and the three-point line (10-22) for the game. The War Hawks out-rebounded the Lobos by a comfortable 42-29 margin.
Sul Ross State actually took an 18-16 lead after one period. But the War Hawks uncorked a 27-point second quarter to hold the upper hand, 43-35, at the half. McMurry kept its foot on the accelerator in the second half, with 25 and 22 points in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
McMurry will play its second-straight home game on Saturday (1 p.m.) when it hosts Howard Payne University.
