BELTON, Texas – Sophomore guard Khalil Butler posted another double-double and junior guard Zacc Carter made five free throws in the final 90 seconds as McMurry University Men's Basketball snapped it's seven-game losing streak with a 75-72 American Southwest Conference win at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon.
Tied at 58 with 6:16 to play, senior forward Jordan Jackson hit a jumper that would give the War Hawks (5-12, 2-6 ASC) a lead they would not relinquish. Junior guard Trevin Ramirez knocked down a three pointer on the next possession to give McMurry a four-point lead, and the War Hawks made 10 free throws in the final five minutes to hold off the Crusaders (13-4, 4-4 ASC).
UMHB had two chances to tie the game at the buzzer, but both shots clanged off the rim, preserving the McMurry victory.
It was a windshield wiper kind of game, as the teams traded the lead 16 times throughout the contest. McMurry held the largest lead of the game at 58-50, while the Cru never led by more than three.
Butler led the War Hawks with another double-double, his fourth of the season, scoring 14 points while grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. He dished out a team leading five assists as he went 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Carter matched Butler's 14 points, going 5-of-6 from the line, all in the final minutes.
Ramirez and junior forward Mike Williams Jr. each added 12 points, respectively, to give the War Hawks four players in double figures. Ramirez hit countless jumpers when UMHB threatened to take back the lead.
Sophomore guard Colin Taylor and Jackson chipped in nine and eight points, respectively. Jackson had McMurry's only field goal in the final five minutes to give the War Hawks a three-point lead.
The Cru came in tops in the ASC averaging more than 93 points per game, but the McMurry defense was up to the task, holding UMHB to more than 20 points below their average. The Cru shot just 31.6 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from distance.
McMurry held a 26-9 advantage in bench points, while each team scored 22 points in the paint.
The War Hawks were able to dispatch an 18-point difference at the charity stripe by shooting 42.6 percent from the floor, making eight more baskets, including five more threes.
The win marked the first time the War Hawks had defeated the Cru since the 2012 ASC Tournament Semifinals.
After the last two weekends on the road and playing nine of 10 away from home, the War Hawks will return to Kimbrell Arena January 17 to host Sul Ross State University at 7:30 p.m.
