AUSTIN, Texas – For the second time in as many games, the McMurry University women's basketball team went to overtime on the road, this time emerging with a 70-69 American Southwest Conference win over Concordia University-Texas. The War Hawks improved to 5-11 overall and 2-5 in the ASC, while the Tornados' record deflated to 7-9 and 3-4 in ASC action.
Junior forward
Skyler Reyna once again keyed the win with some timely baskets and while registering her eighth double-double of the season (and 27th of her McM career). Reyna scored a season-high 21 points, hitting 9-of-20 from the field. She also hauled in 13 boards, to go along with a par of steals.
The War Hawks bounded ahead in the opening quarter, twice leading by five points, before eventually ending the quarter with a 16-12 lead. McMurry had its largest lead of the opening half at 9:32 of the second quarter on a
Brittany Rodgers layup that made it 18-12. But the Tornados would outscore McM by a 17-8 margin the rest of the half and lead, 29-26, heading into the locker room.
CTX expanded its advantage to 44-36 with a little more than four minutes remaining in the third quarter. With 1:03 left, McM's
Chyna Washington's first bucket of the night cut that to 47-44, before the stanza ended on a 49-44 Tornados lead heading into the final quarter.
CTX led by as much as seven points, 58-51, with 6:10 left in regulation. But a three-point play by Reyna put the War Hawks ahead 62-60, before a layup by the Tornados in the final 30 seconds sent the contest to the overtime segment.
In the extra segment, CTX scored the first three points within the first eight seconds. But then the War Hawks' defense clamped down and the Tornados did not score again until just nine seconds remained, a dry spell of 4:43 minutes. In the interim, back-to-back buckets by Reyna, a free throw from
Savannah Johnson and a trio of charity makes from Doherty gave McMurry the margin it would need (after allowing for an uncontested CTX layup just prior to the final buzzer) for the 70-69 win.
Sarah Doherty also had another nice outing for the War Hawks, tallying 13 points and corralling seven rebounds (six on the defensive glass). She had a pair of three-point baskets to her credit and passed off for five assists.
Teammate Dominique Machca matched Doherty's five assists. The senior guard had two steals and chipped in six points.
Freshman post played
Savannah Johnson was 4-of-8 from the field and 2-of-3 from the line, finishing with 10 points as the team's third double-figure scorer. She also had five rebounds, as did sophomore
Brittany Rodgers. Rodgers added nine points to the McM totals.
The War Hawks will play its fourth-consecutive road game on Saturday, January 19 (1 p.m.) when they travel to nationally-ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
